Hut architecture in the Val de Zinal

What could be more astonishing than the diversity of architectural styles found in mountain huts? The Arpitettaz hut was opened in 1953 and renovated in 2015. It is a classic refuge built of local stone and wood. The Tracuit hut, on the other hand, dates back to 1929 and was demolished and rebuilt in 2012-2013. Two styles, two eras. A two days walk in a fantastic setting combining mountain pastures, imposing Alpine peaks, glaciers and...architecture!

A three-days hike in the canton of Valais

This hike combines a high mountain walk with a reflection about mountain architecture and energy. The Cabane d'Arpitetta is run with sufficency. As far as possible, it avoids using helicopters for supplies. As was the case several decades ago, each guest can bring his own food, which will be prepared by the caretaker. The Tracuit hut, on the other hand, is a modern building  built a decade ago integrating recent technologies and providing a maximum of comfort.

DAY 1: Meeting in Zinal (1675 m), hike to the Arpitetta hut (2786 m). 6-hour hike.

DAY 2: Arpittetaz hut to Tracuit hut  (3256 m). 6-hour hike.

Day 3: Tracuit hut - La Bourica – Zinal (1675 m),. 5-hour hike.

A hike and architectural journey through breathtaking Alpine scenery requiring good physical condition. It may be worth spending a night in Zinal beforehand to acclimatize to the altitude.
